Eric Chapman - Police Officer Fatality - South Carolina

Corporal James Eric Chapman, age 30, died in the line of duty on December 8, 2017, at a hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Corporal Chapman was a member of the Johnston Police Department, South Carolina. He had over 2 years of service.

Corporal Chapman was known as Eric to his family and friends.

Johnston is a town in Edgefield County, South Carolina with a population of under 2,500. It is part of the Augusta, Georgia, metropolitan area.

After 10:00 p.m., Eric was responding to a call for backup from another officer when he was involved in a single vehicle crash in Edgefield County. It is believed that his vehicle hydroplaned.

Eric was rushed to a hospital in Augusta where, tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.

Eric served with the U.S. Marine Corps from 2010 to 2014. He had served a tour of duty in Afghanistan. He was a native of Saluda, South Carolina.

their brother. Eric was a hard worker who died in the service of his community. He was one of the good guys. Eric will be forever remembered.

Eric's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was greatly loved. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Oceans of tears have been shed for Eric.

Eric is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, Brenda and James; two sisters; his wife, Tonya; his daughter and three step-children.
