Patrick Weatherford - Police Officer Fatality - Arkansas

Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford, age 41, died in the line of duty on June 12, 2017, at a hospital in Newport, Arkansas.

Lieutenant Weatherford was a member of the Newport Police Department. He was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. He had 15 years of service. 

Newport is the county seat of Jackson County, Arkansas, and has a population of under 8,000. It is about 90 miles northeast of Little Rock. 

In the early evening hours, Patrick and other officers were investigating reports of a vehicle larceny at a city intersection. They pursued a man fleeing on foot into a residential area. During the pursuit, the suspect turned and shot Patrick. 

Patrick was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he died of his injuries. 

Tyler Calamese, age 18, turned himself into the police about 90 minutes later.

Patrick was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He also achieved a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Administration. In 2016, he was proclaimed as the Jackson County Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. 

The members of the Newport Police Department are in mourning over the death of their brother. Patrick was a highly-educated professional who died in the service of his community. He will be forever remembered.

Patrick's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was kind in spirit and was loving. He was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Patrick is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and son.
