Deputy Burbridge was a member of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office, based in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He had also worked for the Council Bluff's Police Department. He had 12 years of service in law enforcement.
Mark and another Deputy were returning two prisoners to the County jail after a court appearance. One of inmates was able to grab one of the deputy's guns and shot them both. He then stole the transport van and fled the scene. He also shot a citizen during a carjacking attempt. He then abducted a woman and forced her to drive him from the scene in her vehicle.
After a high speed chase, the man, Wesley Correa-Carmenaty, in his early 20's, was taken into custody. He was already facing 45 years in prison for a previous murder that he had committed in March of 2016.
The other injured Deputy, Pat Morgan, is in a hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
