Curtis Bartlett

Deputy Sheriff Curtis Bartlett, age 32, died in the line of duty on March 9, 2017, in Carroll County, Virginia.

Deputy Sheriff Bartlett was a member of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office based in Huntsville, Virginia. He had 3 1/2 years of service with Carroll County and one year of service with the Albemarle Police Department in North Carolina.

Late on March 9th, Curtis was responding to assist another Deputy and a Virginia State Police trooper who were pursuing a vehicle. He was traveling on Highway 58 when his patrol car collided with a semi-trailer.

Tragically, Curtis succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle being pursued was arrested and charged with driving on a revoked license resulting in death and related charges.

Curtis was a U.S. Army veteran and served from November of 2004 to July of 2007. 

He graduated from Galax High School in Galax, Virginia. He was a 2013 graduate of the New River Criminal Justice Training Academy in Dublin, Virginia. Curtis joined the Carroll County Sheriff's Office in June of 2013.

Friends describe Curtis as a talented and helpful man. He was a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer who was recognized for his commitment to health, nutrition and fitness. He strived to motivate others within the Sheriff’s Office and other agencies to work towards healthier lifestyles. He was also a personal fitness trainer. He had also served as a resource officer at county schools. He was a certified K-9 handler and a licensed pilot.

The members of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office are in mourning over the death of their brother. Curtis was a dedicated and professional Deputy who was well-respected by his comrades. He will be forever remembered.

Curtis' loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Curtis is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents and four siblings.
