Nicholas Ryan Smarr and Jody Smith - Law Enforcement Fatalities - Americus, Georgia

A terrible tragedy has occurred in Georgia. 

Police Officer Nicholas Smarr, age 25, died in the line of duty on December 7, 2016, at a hospital in Americus, Georgia. 

Nicholas was known as Nick to his friends and family.

Public Safety Officer Jody Smith, age 26, died in the line of duty on December 8, 2016, at a hospital in Macon, Georgia.

Officer Smarr was a member of the Americus Police Department. He had 1 year of service. He had prior service with other law enforcement agencies.

Officer Smith was a member of the Georgia Southwestern University Department of Public Safety, located in Americus Georgia. He had been with the Department for 4 months. He had previously served with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office and Plains Police Department.

Americus is a city of just over 17,000 and is 75 miles southwest of Macon, Georgia.

After 9:30 a.m., on December 7, 2016, Officer Smarr was called out to a domestic disturbance incident at an apartment complex near the University. Officer Smith responded to a request for back-up.

As they arrived at the apartment an armed male, Minguell Lembrick, age 32, approached them and started shooting. Both officers were struck down.

The shooter's name has also been reported as being Minquell Lembrick.

Nicholas was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he died of his injuries.

Jody was flown to a hospital in Macon where, tragically, the next day he died of his injuries.

The male shooter fled the scene. His body was found by SWAT team officers on December 8, 2016, at a local residence. He had committed suicide. He had a very lengthy prior criminal history.

Nick and Jody had both graduated from Americus-Sumter High School in 2009 and went on to the police academy together and became police officers. They were best friends. Loved ones describe them as being like brothers. 


Both Nick and Jody had fiancées who they intended to marry in 2017. 

Oceans of tears have been shed for these two men. 

The law enforcement comrades of Nicholas Ryan Smarr and of Jody Smith are in mourning over the deaths of their young brothers. They will be forever remembered.

Nick's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned. He will be forever missed.
