Matthew Thompson - U.S. Military Fatality - Afghanistan

Staff Sgt. Matthew V. Thompson, age 28, of Irvine, California, died in the line of duty on August 23, 2016, in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. 

Staff Sgt. Thompson was on patrol near Lashkar Gah when he was fatally injured by an improvised explosive device. 

Staff Sgt. Thompson was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Matthew and his comrades were helping with a defence against a heavy Taliban attack in the area of Lashkar Gah. The Taliban is trying to re-take the City from the Afghan Army.

One other American soldier and six Afghan soldiers were wounded in the explosion. 

Matthew enlisted in the Army in 2011. He reported as a Medical Sergeant to the 1st Special Forces Group in 2014. He had previously deployed to Iraq. This was his first tour of duty in Afghanistan. 

The soldiers of Joint Base Lewis-McChord are in mourning over the death of their brother. Military officials stated that Matthew was an exceptional Green Beret and was a well-respected professional. He was one of the good guys. He will be forever remembered.

Matthew's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He was a loving husband. He loved his family and he was loved in return. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Matthew is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.

Thank you for your service to America, Matthew. 

Pray for all who die while far away from their loved ones. 

Pray, without ceasing unto God, for an end to war.

Pray that Matthew is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
