Jose Chavez - Police Officer Fatality - New Mexico

Police Officer Jose Chavez, age 33, died in the line of duty on August 12, 2016, at a hospital in El Paso, Texas.

Officer Chavez was a member of the Hatch Police Department in New Mexico. He had 2 years of service. 

Hatch is a village in Doña Ana County and is part of the Las Cruces Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In mid afternoon, Jose was conducting a traffic stop on a main street of Hatch. There were three males in the vehicle. One of them exited the vehicle firing a gun. Jose was shot in the neck. 

Another officer pursued the suspects at high speed for several miles. 

These men then stole another car and shot another victim. They continued fleeing until they were stopped by the use of stop sticks on the roadway. 

Jose was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso where, tragically, he succumbed to his wounds. 

Jesse Hanes, age 38, of Columbus, Ohio, has been arrested in connection with Jose's death. Jesse Hanes is also wanted for murder in Ohio. He has a long history of criminal activity in Ohio including involuntary manslaughter and robbery. He has a

Another white male and a black male were also arrested in connection with this crime. 

Jose had graduated in 2013 from the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Cadet Law Enforcement Academy.

The Hatch Police Department is in mourning over the death of their brother. He was a professional. He was trying to do the right thing. He will be forever remembered.

Jose's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Jose is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife and his two children.

God save us from the psychopaths. They are killing us, Father. Amen.
