Captain Robert David Melton, age 46, died in the line of duty on July 19, 2016, at a hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.
Robert David Melton

Captain Melton was a member of the Kansas City Police Department. He had 26 years of service in law enforcement. He had previously served with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office.

He was known as Dave to his family and friends.

In the early afternoon, officers had responded to a call that several people in a vehicle were firing a gun. When the officers arrived at the scene, several male suspects fled on foot. One man was apprehended and a search ensued for the other men involved. Dave was one of the officers involved in the search.

He came across one of the men a short time later at a city intersection. That man shot Captain Melton.

Dave was rushed to a nearby hospital where, tragically, he was pronounced deceased.

The shooter is in custody.

Dave had graduated from the Kansas City Community College. He had served in Afghanistan as a member of the Kansas National Guard.

Michael, Patron Saint of the
Police, pray for Dave and for
those who have lost him.

Dave is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.
