Sergeant Hutchinson was a member of the Travis County Sheriff's Office. He had 32 years of service in law enforcement.

Austin is the county seat for Travis County.

Sometime after 1:00 a.m., Craig returned to his home after his shift. It is believed that he interrupted a burglary in progress at his home. He radioed dispatch and told them that several prowlers were running out of his backyard.

Deputies responded immediately and found Craig in his yard. He had been shot several times. He was rushed to a local hospital where, tragically, he died of his injuries.

The suspects fled the scene and are still at large.

To the thieves who killed Craig Hutchinson, we ask this question: What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul?

The Travis County Sheriff's Office is in mourning over the death of their brother. Craig was a big teddy bear who was well-liked by everyone. He was a gentle man and was a mentor to others. He will be forever remembered.

Craig's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He did his best. He will be forever mourned.

Craig is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members who will forever miss him.

Thank you for your service to the community, Craig.

God save us from the thieves. They are killing us, Father. Amen.

Pray that Craig is in Heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
