Jeffery Conlin (L); Officer Richard Martin (R)
Officers were pursuing a U-Haul van that had been car-jacked in North Houston. The driver may have been involved in an attempted robbery earlier. The van's driver fired several shots at officers during the pursuit and then bailed out.  He car-jacked a second vehicle and fled again.

At about 2:30 a.m., Richard was setting up spike strips at a highway intersection to try to disable the vehicle when the driver intentionally ran him down. Richard died at the scene.

The vehicle continued on and then stopped on a local freeway.  The driver tried to kill himself but was apprehended by the police.  He had a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a local hospital
