Alex Yazzie - Law Enforcement - Navajo Nation

Officer Alex Yazzie, age 42, died in the line of duty on March 19, 2015, near Red Valley, Arizona.

Officer Yazzie was a member of the Navajo Nation Tribal Police. He had 14 years of service in law enforcement.

During the afternoon of March 19, 2015, a call came in to the Shiprock, New Mexico police that Justin Fowler, age 24, was beating his wife and mother. The operator heard shots being fired in the background. 

The officer who responded was shot at by Justin Fowler who then fled in his vehicle. That night Justin Fowler shot at another officer and then drove toward Arizona. More than 30 Navajo police officers were involved in the apprehension of Fowler. 

Justin Fowler crashed his car in Arizona and exchanged more gunfire with police officers.  Three officers were shot.  Two were wounded and one, Officer Alex Yazzie, was fatally wounded.

Justin Fowler was shot and killed in the exchange of gunfire. 

Officer Yazzie was a Marine Corps veteran. 

The Navajo Tribal Police are in mourning over the death of their brother. He died in the service of his community. He will be forever remembered.

Alex's loved ones are devastated over his sudden and tragic death. He is described as a man of courage, honor, kindness and wit. He is his family's hero. He will be forever mourned.

Alex is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his wife, Miranda, and his two young children.

God save us from the Lost Ones who bring death to strangers.  Amen. 

Pray that Alex is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
