Michael Norris - Deputy Sheriff - Georgia

Deputy Sheriff Michael Norris, age 24, died in the line of duty, on September 14, 2014, at a hospital in Macon, Georgia.

Michael was a member of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. He had two years of service.

On September 13, 2014, Deputy Sheriff Norris and Deputy Jeff Wilson had responded to a call that a man was armed and suicidal at an address in Bolingbroke, Georgia.

At about 5:45 p.m., the deputies approached the subject's residence and an exchange of gunfire erupted. Both deputies were wounded.  Michael Norris was shot in the head.  Tragically Michael passed away the next day. His organs were donated for transplants.

The suspect, Christopher Calmer, age 46, was also wounded during the exchange of gunfire and was taken into custody. He will be charged with murder and attempted murder. 

Michael graduated from Mary Persons High School in 2008 and went on to study criminal justice at Gordon State College.  He graduated with an associate degree.

Michael started with the sheriff’s department two years ago as a jail officer. He served as a school resource officer at K.B. Sutton Elementary School for the 2013-2014 school year and transferred to the patrol division in June of 2014.

brother. Comrades describe him as dedicated, hard-working and determined. He is also described as respectful and helpful. He will be forever remembered. 

Friends describe Michael as a country boy who liked to hunt and fish.  He often had a smile on his face and liked to crack jokes. Even as a kid, he was helpful to others in need. He stepped up to the plate when something needed to be done. 

Michael's loved ones are devastated over his senseless and tragic death. They stated that Michael knew he wanted to be a deputy even as a teen. He will be forever mourned.

Michael is survived by many loving comrades, friends and family members including his parents, Bennett and Fran; his brother; and his wife, Logan.

God save us from the Lost Ones who bring death to strangers. They are killing us, Father.

Pray that Michael is in heaven. Pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
