Michael Pimentel - Police Chief killed in Texas

Chief of Police Michael Pimentel, age 64, died in the line of duty on August 23, 2014, at a hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

Michael was the Chief of the Elmendorf Police Department.  He had 43 years of service in law enforcement. 

Elmendorf has a population of 1,488 and is 17 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio. 

At about 11:30 a.m., Chief Pimentel spotted a vehicle whose driver had an active warrant for graffiti.   The Chief stopped the vehicle in a residential area of Elmendorf.  A confrontation between the officer and the suspect developed and during the struggle, Michael was shot several times. 

He was airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio where he passed away from his wounds.

Bexar County deputies responded to the scene and took Joshua Manuel Lopez, age 24, into custody.  He will be charged with capital murder of a police officer.  If he is convicted, he could be sentenced to death. 

Michael was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.  

He had previously served as Chief of the San Antonio Independent School District Police Department.

The town of Elmendorf is in mourning over this tragic death. Michael will be forever remembered.
