Nicholas S. O'Brien

Lance Cpl. Nicholas S. O’Brien, age 21, of Stanley, North Carolina, died on June 9, 2011, while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, IMarine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, California.

Nicholas O'Brien was a 2008 East Gaston High School graduate who turned 21 about two weeks ago in Afghanistan. He entered active duty in the Fall of 2009.

He was known as "Nic" to his family and friends. 

He said to his family in March, 2011:  "If something happens..., don't cry over me because this is what I want to be doing."

Family members said that: "Nic made his mind up when he was about 15 years old that he was going into the Marine Corps - come hell or high water." They also stated that: "He was a true American hero in every sense of the word....He sacrificed his life for something he believed in."

Nicholas O'Brien is survived by his parents and his sister, Haley.

Let us pray to God the Father, Jesus, all of the saints and all of the angels that Nicholas S. O'Brien is in heaven. Let us pray that he is at peace and is with God. Amen.
